Competitive advantage means being better than other organisations.  Whether it's a bull market or a recession, to be competitive organisations must be creative, flexible and resilient.  You can achieve this by having better people, better processes and ultimately a better company culture.  As ergonomists, we can help organisations achieve competitive advantage by providing tools and workplaces that empower employees and promote creativity.  Human centred design not only engages and motivates people, but also results in more effective systems.

Biography

Leslie is joint Managing Director of System Concepts.  She holds an MSc and BSc Honours in Kinesiology from Dalhousie University and an Executive MBA from Cass Business School (City of London University).  As a human factors consultant, Leslie has worked in medical, military, industrial and office environments across Europe, North America and the Caribbean. She sits on the executive committee of the UK Usability Professional's Association (UPA) and is a full member of the Association of Canadian Ergonomists.

Before joining System Concepts, Leslie worked with Humansystems, Canada, as a human factors consultant in military, industrial and office environments. She provided human factors support on a number of projects which entailed the identification of stakeholder and user requirements, developing Business Use Cases and Use Case Models, evaluating designs and conducting usability studies. Leslie also worked for Ergoworks Atlantic, Canada, specializing in office ergonomics, developing and implementing ergonomics programs, providing ergonomics training and work area layouts.   In 2001, Leslie joined System Concepts. Here she has gained extensive experience providing clients with project management, strategies for usability and accessibility, and applying a user centred design approach. Leslie is the principle trainer for System Concepts usability and accessibility training programmes. Leslie is also experienced with tools such as Visio, Mannequin Pro, AutoCAD Light, Rational Rose, Microsoft Project and customer relationship management systems.

“I Love my Job”: Design Characteristics of Healthy Work

A good deal is now known about the characteristics that make for good/healthy jobs.  In this presentation I first consider what it means to love one’s job.  I then focus on four core elements (challenge, control, climate, and leadership) that result in individuals loving their jobs.  Implications for both job design and managerial practice will be discussed.

Biography

E. Kevin Kelloway, PhD is the Canada Research Chair in Occupational Health Psychology at Saint Mary’s University where he also serves as Director of the CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.  A graduate of Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s and Queen’s Universities, Dr. Kelloway is a prolific researcher who has authored over 100 articles and authored/edited 10 books.  He is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, the Canadian Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial Organizational Psychology.  Dr. Kelloway consults to both private and public sector organizations on issues related to leadership and occupational health and safety.

A cancellation fee of $50.00 is charged if notified in writing by February 26, 2010. All cancellations received thereafter are non-refundable.
